A retired Georgia combat veteran is fighting a rule on outside decorations at his Atlanta-area retirement community that calls for him to remove either his American or U.S. Marine Corps flag.
Former Marine Captain Jim Lowe told MyFoxAtlanta that management at his active adult community in Griffin has asked him to take down one of the flags.
The community's codes state that each home in the retirement community can only have one flag, but Lowe contends that the Marine Corps battle color is not a flag.
"I don't consider it a flag," Lowe told the station. "Most people don't. You talk to any Marine. Those are the colors."
Lowe and his wife face a fines of up to $25 a day and possible legal action. He said he has sent a letter to management asking them to retract the code violation notice, according to the report.
An on-site manager told MyFoxAtlanta.com that the community's board of directors and attorney will review the code on flags and notify homeowners if there are any changes to report.
Lowe, who has been inundated with phone calls from supporters, said regardless of what the board decides, he will not take down the patriotic display.
"[If] worse came to worse and I ran out of alternatives, there would be a for sale sign out there before the American flag and my Marine colors came down," Lowe said.
