NYC jury hears closing arguments in sex offenders' suit against ex-Gov. Pataki

A New York City jury is being asked to find former Gov. George Pataki and other state officials liable for allegedly abusing the rights of convicted sex offenders.

A lawyer for six convicts gave closing arguments Monday at a civil trial. He says his clients were unjustly robbed of their liberty when the state involuntarily committed them to mental institutions at the end of their prison terms.

Lawyers for Pataki and other officials argued that the plaintiffs were still dangerous and needed treatment.

Pataki testified last week that his advisers told him the program was legal when he started it in 2005. A state court later ruled the prisoners should have had hearings.

The plaintiffs have asked for unspecified damages.
