Police in southern California are investigating the death of an infant left alone in a parked car, Fox 5 San Diego reports.

The incident involving a 4-month-old child occurred in El Cajon, a San Diego County suburb.

“It hurts me to know that someone's baby passed away,” witness Larry Singleton told NBC 7 in San Diego. “It’s really sad,”

Authorities reportedly responded to the Bella Vista Apartments around 1:30 p.m, after a group of children, playing nearby, alerted Singleton they had seen the youngster, languishing alone, in a vehicle.

NBC 7 reports paramedics found the child unresponsive, administered CPR and rushed the infant to a local hospital, where he later died.

A meterologist told NBC 7 that the temperature was roughly 80 degrees at the time police were called, although Singleton told the station he believes the child may have been left in the car for several hours.

The child’s still-unidentified parents, who Singleton said recently moved to the apartment complex, are speaking with police, although no arrests had reportedly been made as of Sunday morning.
