An activist who posted a video of himself loading a gun in D.C.'s Freedom Plaza is facing charges.

Adam Kokesh of Herndon, Va., appeared Friday in D.C. Superior Court and was ordered held pending a detention hearing Monday. He is charged with one count of openly carrying the weapon in violation of District of Columbia law.

Court documents allege that on July 4, he went to the city's Freedom Plaza and publically loaded four rounds of ammunition into the weapon. A video of him loading the gun posted on YouTube lists "Adam Kokesh" as the video's source.

He faces up to five years in prison and/or a fine of $5,000 if convicted.

Kokesh's attorney said he needed to speak to his client further before talking with the media.
