US designates left-wing Turkish activist as terrorist

The State Department is designating as a terrorist a left-wing operative linked to the group that orchestrated the Feb. 1 suicide bombing on the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, the capital of Turkey.

The suicide bomber killed himself, a Turkish security guard and seriously wounded a former Turkish television journalist. The designation announced Wednesday by the State Department freezes any property or assets that activist, who is named Bulut Yayla, has under U.S. jurisdiction.

The State Department says the group — known as the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front, or DHKP-C — also recently attacked the headquarters of a political party and the Turkish Ministry of Justice.

The group, which wants to set up a socialist state in Turkey, advocates a Marxist-Leninist ideology and opposes the United States' and Turkish governments, as well as NATO.
