The University of Michigan Board of Regents will offer in-state tuition to immigrants who've been living in Michigan without legal permission.
The university currently charges those students out-of-state tuition, which is much higher.
During their meeting Thursday in Ann Arbor, U-M regents passed the proposal that also allows members of the military to receive in-state tuition, regardless of where they live.
The policy revisions go into effect in January.
The move applies to the flagship Ann Arbor campus and satellites in Flint and Dearborn and joins Michigan with other top public colleges like the University of Texas and the University of California.
In-state tuition and fees at U-M cost $13,100 annually, compared to nearly $40,400 for out-of-state tuition and fees.
The Ann Arbor campus has more than 42,000 students.
