A central Pennsylvania college is losing a president but regaining a piece of its history.
Retiring Lycoming College President James Douthat (DOW'-thuht) was cleaning out his office when he stumbled on a historical document stored in the back of a closet shelf.
The certificate signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 named the college's founder as Benjamin Crever, a Civil War chaplain.
College officials say they always knew the document was on campus. Somewhere.
But there are varying theories on how it might be have misplaced.
Douthat says he had never seen the document during his 24 years in office but had heard about it.
Until the college decides where to permanently place the document, it will be kept in the college archives in the basement of the library.
