Several students at a Washington state elementary school were recently suspended for playing with Nerf guns, despite having allegedly received permission from a teacher to bring the toys to school.
KOBI2.com reports that a sixth-grade student brought several of the toy guns to Chase Lake Elementary School in Edmonds last Friday for a project allegedly approved by the student's teacher.
The students were disciplined after they decided to test how far the guns would shoot before school started, according to a parent of one of the students who spoke with the station.
As a result of the one-day suspensions, at least two students who participated in the incident are now prohibited from taking a high school algebra class and serving on the student council, KOBI2.com reported.
A spokesman for the Edmonds School District told the station that an incident occurred, but would not discuss specifics. The school reportedly has a "zero tolerance" policy on toy guns.
"Again, it's a matter of safety and it's of the utmost importance. So even if it's a toy, we take it seriously," spokeswoman Amanda Ralston said.
At least two parents plan to appeal their children's suspensions, according to the report.
