Authorities: Gunman in fatal Texas shooting was a Marine

A Texas gunman opened fire Sunday, killing one and wounding five, including the sheriff of Concho County, before the suspect was killed in a shootout with police.

The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the man as 23-year-old Esteban J. Smith of the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base.

Master Sgt. Jonathan Cress at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base, N.C., said Monday that the Marine was wanted for questioning in a homicide in nearby Jacksonville, N.C.

Camp Lejeune officials would not confirm the suspect's name. However, spokesman Master Sgt. Cress said in an emailed statement that authorities were investigating a possible connection between the Texas shooting and a homicide in Jacksonville, N.C., near the Marine base. He also confirmed that the Texas shooting suspect was an active duty Marine.

In a statement Monday, DPS spokesman Tom Vinger says Smith later died in a gunfight with an agency trooper and a state game warden. Authorities say the Texas shootings seemed to be random.

The suspect opened fire from his pickup truck at about 4:30 a.m. near Eden, according to Reuters.

A statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety identified the dead victim as 41-year-old Alicia Torres, who was shot dead in her car.

A search of the suspect's vehicle reportedly uncovered an assault rifle, a handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

After wounding five others, including Concho County Sheriff Richard Doane, the gunman was killed in a shootout with a Highway Patrol trooper and game warden who arrived to assist Doane, Reuters reported.
