An Alabama mother was shot and killed while standing in the doorway of her apartment holding her 10-day-old son Monday.

Officials tells the Associated Press two men at a nearby store got into a fight. One of the men chased the other down the street and fired a gun as he ran.

Authorities say Williams was hit by a stray bullet and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We need the public to step forward on this, give us all the information they have so we can get this person off the street," Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams told MyFoxAlabama.com.
