WOBURN, Mass. – An Irish nanny accused of killing a Massachusetts baby in her care has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge.
Thirty-four-year-old Aisling (ASH'-ling) Brady McCarthy was ordered held without bail at her arraignment Thursday on charges of murder and assault and battery on a child.
Prosecutors say McCarthy "violently" injured baby Rehma Sabir (REM'-uh suh-BEHR'), who was hospitalized with severe head injuries on her first birthday, Jan. 14, and died two days later. The baby's family lives in Cambridge, just outside Boston.
McCarthy pleaded not guilty earlier to assault and battery. She was indicted on the murder charge last week.
Defense attorney Melinda Thompson says McCarthy maintains her innocence and wants to clear her name.
Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald argued McCarthy should be held without bail because she's in the U.S. illegally.
