The campus of California State University, Los Angeles, has been ordered evacuated and a police bomb squad has been dispatched.
University spokesman Paul Browning says the school's president ordered the evacuation as a precaution at noon Thursday but he could not provide further information.
Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Officer Diana Figueroa says the department's bomb squad has been sent to the campus.
Browning says the university will likely not reopen Thursday.
Cal State LA has about 20,000 students. There are also two high schools on the campus east of downtown Los Angeles.
