Feds: 4 NY, NJ airports didn't follow safety training rules; agency cites paperwork issue

The federal government has cracked down on four New York City area airports for what it calls "egregious" violations of safety and rescue regulations involving more than 250 police officers.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey oversees Kennedy, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty and Teterboro (TEE'-tur-bur-oh) airports. The agency confirmed Monday it was fined more than $3 million for violations going back to 2010.

Spokeswoman Lisa MacSpadden says the Port Authority officers linked to the violations attended recertification sessions. But she says some of the paperwork that proves it was lost or incomplete. She says an undetermined number of officers may have missed hours.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says violations won't be tolerated.

The agency is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to rectify the lapses.
