Judge: Defense contractor may stay in halfway house until military secrets trial in Hawaii

A judge says she'll allow a defense contractor accused of giving military secrets to his Chinese girlfriend to stay at a Honolulu halfway house while he awaits trial.

U.S. District Judge Leslie Kobayashi ruled Monday that conditions can be imposed on Benjamin Bishop's release that would address concerns about him being a flight risk and posing a danger to the community.

Kobayashi directed court officials to put Bishop on the waiting list for a bed at the Mahoney Hale (HAH'-lay) halfway house.

Kobayashi says she'll hold a hearing to determine the conditions of Bishop's release once bed space becomes available. The 59-year-old will remain in federal detention until then.

Bishop is accused of telling his 27-year-old girlfriend secrets about U.S. war plans, nuclear weapons and missile defense.
