Two Virginia students accused of putting hand sanitizer in their teacher's drinks over the course of two or three months are facing felony charges.

Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston told WAVY-TV the two 13-year-old Hines Middle School students have been arrested and each charged with attempted poisoning.

The investigation began in late January when a school resource officer received a tip. The teacher was alerted and she called police.

The intended target of the alleged poison attempt is a 66-year-old Hampton woman who reportedly had stomach discomfort but was never hospitalized.

Newport News Public Schools spokeswoman Michelle Price told WAVY-TV the two male students admitted to the poisoning attempt and have been transferred to an alternative school.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
