Illinois teenager receives $25G from anonymous donor to get back into college

An anonymous donor is being credited with giving $25,000 to an Illinois teenager who was forced to drop out of college because he couldn't afford it, the Chicago-Sun Times reported.

The wealthy stranger donated the money to 19-year-old Monte Johnson after reading a Sun-Times story about Johnson's ordeal.

Johnson, whose father died when he was a baby, was left an orphan after his mother died -- along with 20 others -- in a 2003 nightclub stampede in Chicago, according to the newspaper.

At the time of the incident, Johnson, and other children affected by the tragedy, were promised money from a college scholarship fund set up by the Chicago Public Schools, the newspaper reported.

But Johnson and others never received their share of the money. The teenager was able to enroll at South Carolina State University through a marching band scholarship, but was later forced to drop out because he could no longer afford tuition, according to the newspaper.

On Friday, Johnson's fate changed when an anonymous donor sent the teen $25,000 to finish college.

"There are no words for my gratitude," Johnson's grandmother, Gale Garrett, told the newspaper."'Thank you' doesn't say what is in my heart."

"It has truly renewed my faith," she said.
