19-year-old USS Essex sailor dies after being found with gunshot wound

A 19-year-old sailor died Thursday after being found aboard the USS Essex with a gunshot wound, Navy officials said.

Navy officials have not released the name of the sailor, but have confirmed the victim is a female, Stars and Stripes reported.

Medical personnel aboard the ship evacuated the sailor to the University of California-San Deigo Regional Trauma Center where she was pronounced dead.

“Anytime we lose a shipmate, it’s a tragedy for us,” Naval Surface Force Pacific spokesman Lt. Rick Chernitzer told Stars and Stripes.

“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to family and friends and shipmates.”

Navy officials say the incident remains under investigation.
