HERKIMER, N.Y. – A former boss says the Kurt Myers of the 1980s was intelligent, fond of trivia and a World War II buff. He was a good employee who seemed to work twice as fast as his peers.
But the Myers who killed four men and wounded two others before dying in a gunfight with police in upstate New York was described as spooky and a loner.
Authorities are still trying to piece together what drove the 64-year-old Myers to set fire to his apartment, stroll into a barbershop and open fire, killing two. They say he then drove a mile and killed two more at a car-care shop.
Joseph D'Amica, superintendent of New York's state police, says they don't know what motivated Myers to erupt in violence.
