ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A spokesman for the Alaska National Guard says searchers are on the ground investigating what likely is the site of an airplane missing since Monday on a flight from Anchorage to Takotna.
Lt. Bernie Kale says he did not have enough information from the site near Rainy Pass to characterize the airplane's condition as a wreck and he didn't know the condition of the three people on board.
The Cessna 182 left Anchorage Monday morning.
Takotna is a community of roughly 50 people that's about 235 miles northwest of Anchorage on the route of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
A race spokeswoman says the missing airplane was not part of the Iditarod Air Force that carries volunteers, supplies and dropped race dogs between communities.
