Pittsburgh police chief steps down as FBI launches investigation

Pittsburgh's mayor says the chief of police has stepped down a week after federal agents gathered boxes of records for police headquarters.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said he asked Chief Nate Harper to resign following a meeting with FBI agents earlier Wednesday.

Federal agents took records from police headquarters last week as well as the Greater Pittsburgh Police Federal Credit Union. City Controller Michael Lamb has also announced an audit of the force's special events office.

Ravenstahl ordered a review of the police bureau on Feb. 8 after learning that Harper partnered with four subordinates to form a private security firm -- including a man he promoted to commander.

Harper has denied any wrongdoing. He became chief in October 2006 and had been with the department for 29 years.
