MIAMI – A former Pakistani politician and landowner has described violence committed by Taliban militants, testifying at the trial of a South Florida imam and his son accused of financially supporting the terrorist group.
Saifullah Khan said Monday that he was targeted with death threats by the Taliban as they began attempting to take over Pakistan's Swat Valley in 2007. Khan described beheadings, bombings and attacks on police stations by militants during the conflict.
The testimony came in the second week of the trial of Hafiz Khan and his son, Izhar. Hafiz and Izhar Khan are facing charges of conspiracy and terrorism support. Each charge carries a potential 15-year prison sentence.
Prosecutors say they sent some $50,000 to the Pakistani Taliban. The men claim the money was for innocent purposes.
