A New Jersey family says a church’s decision to hold a second memorial service for a deceased relative – where it asked for donations – is “hurtful.”
In December, the family of 81-year-old Leroy Bonner arranged a funeral and buried him in Camden, Fox 29 reports. But a second obituary on Bonner was published in a newspaper this past weekend that announced a service at Gloucester City's Lighthouse Baptist Church for Monday.
"This is hurtful and we're trying to mourn and we're trying to heal and it's like, he just died yesterday," Anna Fabrizi-Groves, Bonner's niece, told Fox 29.
Family members said they did not know about the service and did not authorize donations to the church’s youth fund.
A pastor at the church said the service for Bonner, who was a 17-year member, is what he would have wanted and any donations would go to the family. The family says it never received such an offer.
