The U.S. Marshals are offering what could be the last public glimpse inside the homes of a disgraced former comptroller who stole $53 million from a northern Illinois city.
The authorities are auctioning off property that belongs to Rita Crundwell, who admitted stealing from Dixon to fund a lavish lifestyle. The auction runs through Saturday.
The marshals are providing guided tours of the three homes that Crundwell owns in Dixon. They include a large house in Western decor, a ranch house and a rental property. The contents of the houses also are up for auction online, including furnishings, artwork, appliances and electronics.
So far, the government has raised about $7.4 million from the sale of Crundwell's horses, luxury motor home, vehicles and other equipment.
Crundwell will be sentenced in February.
