Authorities searching Tempe Town Lake for a missing Arizona State University student say they will resume and expand the search after a resident reported seeing something that resembled a person’s silhouette in the water.
Tempe police spokesman Michael Pooley said that the search for Jack Culolias will now include the river basin and the area north of Tempe Marketplace.
The 19-year-old was last seen 11 p.m. Nov. 30 at Cadillac Ranch at Tempe Marketplace. The freshman, who was in the process of pledging a fraternity, was at the restaurant with dozens of other fraternity and sorority members.
Authorities say Culolias had been kicked out of the bar and was suspected of being drunk. He left the bar without his wallet and cell phone, MyFoxPhoenix.com reports.
Friends say they saw him heading to a taxi cab, but he hasn’t been seen since. His mother reported him missing Sunday.
"It's tough knowing your friend is out there and you don’t know where he is," Steven Bray, Culolias friend told MyFoxPhoenix.com.
"Most of us didn't see him get kicked out of the venue, if we had we probably would've gone with him," he said.
Police officials, who have searched Culolias’ dorm room and nearby hospitals, said they are having a difficult time getting statements from fraternity members regarding the possibility of hazing.
His mother found a shoe she identified as his next to Tempt Town Lake on Tuesday. Authorities were testing the show for DNA.
