An Arizona State University student has been missing since last week and school officials are now investigating allegations of fraternity hazing in the case.
MyFoxPhoenix.com reports that Jack Culolias, 19, was last seen 11 p.m. Friday at Cadillac Ranch at Tempe Marketplace. The freshman, who was in the process of pledging a fraternity, was at the restaurant with dozens of other fraternity and sorority members.
Witnesses say Culolias was drunk and got ejected from the bar, leaving his wallet and cell phone behind. He may have been using a fake ID, the station reports.
"It's tough knowing your friend is out there and you don't know where he is," said friend Steven Bray. "Most of us didn't see him get kicked out of the venue, if we had we probably would've gone with him.”
Police officials, who have searched Culolias’ dorm room and nearby hospitals, said they had a difficult time getting some truthful statements from fraternity members – particularly regarding hazing -- and Culolias' mother told officers he had some concerns about pledge week.
Culolias' mother found his shoe on an embankment next to Tempe Town Lake at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
"She described the shoe and said it was very particular to what he had," said Tempe Police Sgt. Mike Pooley. "Said that was his shoe. That has not been confirmed to us, but we are looking at it to make sure we can either rule it out or find it as a good lead."
The shoe is now being tested for DNA, MyFoxPhoenix.com reports. A search will resume early Wednesday.
