CHICAGO – A lead defense attorney for an influential Chicago-area official has fallen ill, which could delay proceedings in a tax-evasion trial by a day or two.
Potential jurors at Cook County Commissioner William Beavers' trial started filling out questionnaires Monday.
Other members of his defense team told the judge that attorney Victor Henderson had become ill. They asked for a delay in one-on-one questioning of would-be panelists that was supposed to start later Monday.
U.S. District Judge James Zagel says they'll reconvene Tuesday morning.
Jury selection typically takes a day or two. Attorneys had earlier talked about being ready for openings by Tuesday. Openings may now not happen until later this week.
The 77-year-old Beavers has denied diverting money from his campaign funds without reporting it.
