An intense search was under way early Saturday for a gunman who shot and wounded a sheriff's deputy in south Los Angeles.

The member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's street gang bureau was hit shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday in the Florence area, several miles south of downtown, authorities said.

The department has not provided details on what led up to the shooting.

The officer was reported to have stable vital signs early Saturday after undergoing surgery at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, deputy Nicole Nishida said. No other details of his injury or condition were released, and his name was being withheld.

Five or six suspects were being sought, including the suspected shooter, a male who was wearing a white-striped hoodie, according to the sheriff's department.

More than 100 deputies and other law enforcement personnel were involved in the search, with numerous squad cars working out of a command post near the shooting site.
