George Washington University loses coveted 51st ranking by US News after inflated data

George Washington University is no longer being ranked by U.S. News and World Report among the top national universities after the school overstated data on its incoming freshmen class.

The school's 51st ranking was removed Wednesday. U.S. News says the school will have an "unranked" status until the publication of its 2014 edition of "Best Colleges" and until the school confirms the accuracy of its data.

U.S. News chief ranker Bob Morse wrote online Wednesday that the university inadvertently reported the high school class standings of its incoming students for more than a decade. For the 2011 entering class, the number of students listed in the top 10 percent of their high school class was inflated by 20 percentage points.
