Edwin Q. White, Saigon bureau chief for AP during Vietnam War, dies in Honolulu at age 90

Edwin Q. White, a Saigon bureau chief for The Associated Press during the U.S. buildup in the Vietnam War, has died in Honolulu at age 90.

White's daughter, Rachel White Watanabe, said her father died in his sleep early Thursday at his home in Honolulu, where he moved after retiring in 1987.

She said her father was in deteriorating health and had congestive heart failure.

White spent most of his 39-year AP career covering Asia.

Based in Tokyo in the 1960s and '70s, he did special duty in Vietnam, including a two-year stint as chief of the AP Saigon bureau from 1965 to 1967.

He transferred to Hawaii in 1979 but a year later was back in Asia, serving as chief of the Seoul bureau for eight years.
