U.S.

Ex-US President Jimmy Carter and other former world leaders will visit Israel, Egypt

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will travel to Egypt and Israel next week, where he will advocate for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A group of past heads of state that advocates for peace called The Elders announced the visit Thursday.

Its news release says Carter will be joined by former Norway prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland and ex-president of Ireland Mary Robinson. The three belong to The Elders.

Carter wrote the 2006 book "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid." He said, "Israel's continued control and colonization of Palestinian land have been the primary obstacles to a comprehensive peace agreement in the Middle East."

This summer, Carter said publicly that U.S. government influence in the Middle East is as weak as it has been since Israel was established as a nation-state in 1948.
