Schuyler Dixon, a seven-year veteran of The Associated Press, has been promoted to sports writer and will cover teams and events in North Texas.

Dixon, 45, has served as an editor and supervisor in the AP's main Texas bureau since 2011. He will remain based in Dallas and his beats will include the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Stars and the Texas Rangers, as well as area colleges.

Dixon is a former assistant sports editor for both The Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He joined the AP in 2005.

The move was announced Thursday by Assistant Sports Editor Dave Zelio.

"Schuyler brings a strong track record of handling breaking news for AP as well as deep knowledge of the North Texas sports beats," Zelio said. "It's exactly what we need, and we're excited to have him."

Dixon is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.
