Rhode Island school committee seeks end to banned father-daughter dances

A Rhode Island school district has unanimously approved a resolution asking lawmakers to modify a state law to allow father-daughter and mother-son events at schools.

The Cranston School Committee voted unanimously late Monday to approve the resolution asking for the change in state law, The Providence Journal reports.

Roughly 60 people attended the hearing, most of whom expressed support for District Superintendent Judith Lundsten, who ended the events beginning this school year to comply with a state gender discrimination law.

Federal law prohibits discrimination in education on the basis of gender, but the law — known as Title IX — provides an exception for "mother-daughter" and "father-son" activities as long as "reasonable comparable activities" are provided to students of the other sex, according to the ACLU. Rhode Island law, however, offers no such exemption, the Providence Journal reports.
