ARKANSAS UPSET

Kolton Browning made the most of his return to Arkansas.

Browning's 16-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-one lifted Louisiana-Monroe to a 34-31 overtime win over the No. 8 Razorbacks.

Browning accounted for 481 yards of total offense and four touchdowns to lead the Warhawks to their first win over a Southeastern Conference team since defeating Alabama in 2007.

The Warhawks trailed 28-7 midway through the third quarter before rallying behind Browning. The second-team Sun Belt Conference quarterback from a season ago found Brent Leonard for a 23-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-10 with 55 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 28-28.

Leonard finished with 11 catches for 112 yards receiving.

Browning was 42 of 67 passing for 412 yards passing, and he had 69 yards rushing on 16 carries — his last the winding, game-winning scramble in overtime around and through the Arkansas defense.

The Razorbacks played the second half without quarterback Tyler Wilson, who suffered a head injury after taking several big hits in the first half.

REES RESCUE

Tommy Rees didn't play until late in the fourth quarter. He made his time count.

Suspended for the opener, Rees came off the bench to lead No. 22 Notre Dame on a last-minute, drive to set up Kyle Brindza's 27-yard field goal with seven seconds to go and beat Purdue 20-17.

Rees, suspended because he was involved in a skirmish with police at a party in May, relieved starter Everett Golson late in the fourth quarter.

Purdue had tied it 17 when Caleb TerBush threw a 15-yard TD pass to Antavian Edison with 2:12 left, the score set up by Josh Johnson's recovery of a Golson fumble. Golson was shaken up on the play and had trouble gripping the ball, so the Irish turned to Rees, who started 12 games last season.

Rees connected on key third down passes of 10 yards to John Goodman and 21 yards to Robby Toma to get Brindza in position for the game-winning kick. Notre Dame is 2-0 for the first time since 2008.

Golson, in his home debut, completed 21 of 31 for 289 yards with a TD and ran for another but he was sacked five times during a sloppy game that featured 16 penalties — eight on each team. Coach Brian Kelly said Golson would start next week at Michigan State.

BEAVER BASH

It took 41 years for a Big Ten team to visit Corvallis after Oregon State beat Iowa 33-19 in 1971. With this kind of reception from the Beavers, it might be 41 more.

Billed as the biggest non-conference home game in the school's history, the Beavers pulled off a huge upset by beating No. 13 Wisconsin 10-7 to end the Badgers' non-conference winning streak at 33 games.

The Beavers put up a stellar defensive effort that made up for missed chances by the Oregon State offense. Oregon State outgained the Badgers 354-207 and had an 11-minute advantage in time of possession.

Sean Mannion connected with Brandin Cooks on a 20-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the second half to give the Beavers a 10-0 lead, then turned it over to the Oregon State defense that forced two turnovers and held Montee Ball to 61 yards rushing.

INJURIES

— Tulane safety Devon Walker fractured his spine in a head-to-head collision with a teammate against Tulsa after being sandwiched between two players during a tackle. Dr. Buddy Savoie said during a postgame news conference that Walker is in stable condition and will need spinal surgery in the "the next day or two."

— Wyoming sophomore quarterback Brett Smith was taken off the field on a stretcher after being injured in the fourth quarter against Toledo. A Toledo defender appeared to grab Smith by his collar while another Rockets player came in late and hit Smith in the head as he went out of bounds. Medical personnel strapped Smith to a backboard, immobilized his head and legs and then carted him off on a stretcher.

— Indiana quarterback Tre Roberson will miss the rest of the season with a broken left leg suffered in a 45-6 win over Massachusetts. Roberson left the field in an ambulance after being tackled at the 2-yard line of Massachusetts about two minutes into the second quarter.

— Indiana quarterback Tre Roberson went out with an apparent left leg injury after running for two touchdowns against Massachusetts. Roberson was hurt and left the field in an ambulance after being tackled at the 2-yard line of Massachusetts about two minutes into the second quarter.

— Wisconsin receiver Jared Abbrederis left the No. 13 Badgers' game against Oregon State with a chest injury following a big hit in the second quarter. He was hurt when he got sandwiched by Oregon State's Rueben Robinson and Feti Taumoepeau on a crossing route and was later taken to the hospital to be evaluated. Abbrederis was expected to accompany the team on its flight back to Wisconsin.

— Missouri offensive tackle Elvis Fisher was carted off with an apparent right leg injury in the second quarter of the school's SEC debut against No. 7 Georgia. The senior was hurt in a pileup on a running play and left the field with help from trainers favoring the leg. After time on the table behind the bench, he was carted off.

— Arkansas cornerback Tevin Mitchel was taken from the field on a stretcher after a helmet-to-helmet collision with teammate Alonzo Highsmith in the fourth quarter against Louisiana-Monroe. Arkansas said he was responsive on the field, and was not more specific than to say the injury was "above the shoulders." Quarterback Tyler Wilson also suffered a head injury after taking several big hits in the first half and didn't play in the second.

WINLESS PENN STATE

Penn State is still looking for its first win under coach Bill O'Brien. The Nittany Lions may not get more chances than they had against Virginia.

Cavaliers quarterback Michael Rocco hit Jake McGee on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 1:28 left, and Penn State kicker Sam Ficken then missed his fourth field goal of the game — from 42 yards — to preserve Virginia's 17-16 victory.

The loss in O'Brien's first road game had to hurt the Nittany Lions as much as their defeat last weekend at home against Ohio. Penn State (0-2) largely stymied Virginia's offense and forced four turnovers in Virginia territory, continually giving its offense opportunities, but McGloin and Co. converted those chances into just three points.

SCHOLARSHIP KICK

Walk-on Edgar Castaneda kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired gave Sacramento State a stunning 30-28 win over Colorado — and earned himself a scholarship in the process.

Castaneda joined the Hornets after helping City College of San Francisco win the junior college national championship last season, but he was paying his own way until Saturday, when his first game-winner at any level earned him not only a hug from coach Marshall Sperbeck, but also an education.

Sperbeck made the announcement during his postgame speech in the Hornets' locker room.

___

GI TD

Army veteran Daniel Rodriguez made his first college catch in No. 12 Clemson's 52-27 victory over Ball State.

Rodriguez caught a 4-yard pass from Morgan Roberts midway through the fourth quarter and received a loud ovation from the crowd at Memorial Stadium.

The 24-year-old Rodriguez joined the program last month. He spent three years in the Army, serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He received both the Bronze Star Medal of Valor and the Purple Heart for serving in the battle of Kamdesh in October 2009.

He is attending Clemson on the GI Bill.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN LOW

It was a rough day for college football teams in Colorado.

In Boulder, Colorado lost 30-28 to Sacramento State on a last-second field goal. Later in the day, North Dakota State, the reigning FCS national champion, ran over Colorado State 22-7.

CU's loss came when the Hornets got the ball at their own 15 with 2:26 left and marched downfield for Edgar Castaneda's winning 30-yard field goal as time expired.

Colorado State was more methodical, with Sam Ojuri scoring two touchdowns and North Dakota State's defense stuffing the Rams all night.

At least Northern Colorado won. The Bears beat Colorado Mesa 40-3.
