The Democrats wrapped up their convention with a speech by President Obama last night. The president made a case for a second term saying he had rescued the economy from an economic disaster and needed more time to finish turning things around. It was a speech notable for some soaring rhetoric, but also substantial attacks on his opponent (who he did not name). Reaction to the speech was muted outside the stadium.. Not a lot of high praise from pundits. It did, however, break records for twitter traffic! Some analysts thought it was more like a State of the Union speech or an enhanced stump speech.
Some of the memorable lines from the President: "After two wars that have cost us thousands of lives and over a trillion dollars, it's time to do some nation-building right here at home, " I never said this journey would be easy, and I won't promise that now." ." "We don't think government can solved all our problems. But we don't think that the government is the source of all our problems - any more than are welfare recipients, or corporation, or unions, or gays, or any other group we're told to blame for our troubles,"
"Yes our path is harder, but it leads to a better place. Yes our road is longer, but we travel it together. We don't turn back. We leave no one behind. We pull each other up. We draw strength from our victories, and we learn from our mistakes, but we keep our eyes fixed on that distant horizon, knowing that Providence is with us, and that we are surely blessed to be citizens of the greatest nation on Earth."
Vice President Joe Biden and John Kerry also had sharp attacks on the GOP.
Perhaps the best moment was when Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords gave the Pledge of Allegiance. Nice moment.
