Authorities say a spinning amusement ride hit a worker in the head and killed him at a carnival in New York.

Suffolk County police and the worker's employer say he went under the ride called the Scat on Saturday night to take care of something related to its music. Police say he stood up, and the ride hit him and knocked him to the ground.

The 16 riders were unhurt on the Scat at the Feast of Mother Cabrini festival on Long Island.

Carnival organizers identified the worker as 22-year-old Michael Austin. His employer, Pete Zorlenzan, says Austin worked for him for several weeks.

Organizers say the 1972 ride was found to be working properly. It features riders standing in spinning baskets.

State and federal workplace-safety officials were investigating Sunday.
