Transit officials in Philadelphia say a car and a city bus collided in north Philadelphia, killing a car passenger and injuring the driver as well as 11 people on the bus, including the operator.

Fire department personnel said the crash was reported just after 6 p.m. Monday at Old York Road and West Sparks Street.

Spokeswoman Jerri Williams of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority says the car veered into the oncoming lane and hit the southbound Route 55 bus, killing a passenger and injuring the driver.

She said 11 people on the bus, including the operator, were taken to hospitals, but none of those injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

Officials at Einstein Medical Center, where the car driver and some of the other victims were taken, declined immediate comment.
