DENVER – Gov. John Hickenlooper is asking President Barack Obama to expand disaster aid for communities hurt by wildfires.
Obama in late June declared a disaster in Colorado, making federal funds available to help pay for emergency protective measures for the High Park and Waldo Canyon fire areas.
Hickenlooper asked Obama in a letter Wednesday to also make aid available for the Last Chance Fire in Washington County and the Woodland Heights Fire in Larimer County.
Hickenlooper also asked that more aid be made available, saying the June declaration didn't account for impacts on roads, power lines, reservoirs and other infrastructure.
The governor says local and state resources have been stretched this summer by several large wildfires, flooding in burned areas, and tornadoes.
Obama plans to visit Colorado next week.
