A student at the University of Maine died Saturday evening after falling 60 feet from a trail in Acadia National Park, The Bangor Daily News reported.

Shirley Ladd, a senior psychology major, was hiking with one other person when she fell from the Precipice Trail as they approached the summit of Champlain Mountain, the report said. A park ranger told the paper that the trail is one of the most difficult on the East Coast.

Ladd, 22, was tended to by a nurse and paramedic who happened to be on the trail. She was eventually raised by a pulley system to the mountain's summit. A helicopter waited to move her to a hospital, the report said. It reportedly took six hours to get the woman to the summit.
