The White House says President Barack Obama called Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday and they agreed that the growing violence in Syria shows the need for a political transition as soon as possible.

The White House says the two leaders noted their differences in dealing with the crisis but agreed to have their officials work toward a solution. There were no apparent signs of a breakthrough.

Russia and China have consistently shielded the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad from international sanctions over violent crackdowns. Russia has also continued to provide Syria with arms despite Western calls for a halt in supplies.
