NEW YORK – A woman accused of shaking down New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was freed from jail Friday, walking out of a courthouse on bond after five months behind bars.
With an ankle monitor and orders to avoid Cashman and even Yankee Stadium, Louise Neathway left a Manhattan courthouse arm-in-arm with her mother, who posted Neathway's $300,000 bond. The family and lawyers had spent months trying to get her out of jail, first attempting unsuccessfully to get the bond lowered and then working to raise the money.
"She's very happy to be released" and to start focusing on fighting the allegations, Neathway's lawyer, Lawrence P. LaBrew, said by phone after court. "We're looking forward to a trial."
Cashman's spokesman, Chris Giglio, declined to comment on Neathway's release.
The Manhattan district attorney's office says Neathway, a 36-year-old medical sales worker from Britain, stalked Cashman and extorted $6,000 from him by threatening to hurt his reputation.
She says she had a consensual affair with Cashman, became pregnant with his child and had an abortion after he said he wouldn't participate in raising the child. Cashman was married at the time; his wife has since filed for divorce.
In a July 2011 reference letter on Yankees letterhead, Cashman said he'd known Neathway for six years and worked with her on charitable projects, according to reports confirmed by a previous Neathway lawyer.
Neathway also is facing a slate of other charges ranging from harassing her ex-husband and another man to lying on an apartment application. She has pleaded not guilty to all of them.
"As time goes on, the truth will come out," LaBrew said.
Besides Cashman, Neathway must stay away from a dozen other people as a condition of her bond. They include her own 14-year-old daughter.
Meanwhile, Neathway is on probation from a 2008 New Jersey trespassing conviction. There, she was accused of sending a man as many as 200 text messages in a weekend, prosecutors said.
