A Philadelphia-area university went on alert Thursday after a student upset over parking tickets tweeted that there would be a "re-enactment of Columbine" on campus, The Delaware County Daily Times reported.

Cheyney University officials warned students about the threat at approximately 9:00am local time after receiving the message on Twitter and asked those on campus to be vigilant of their surroundings. Students were also urged to report any suspicious activity to authorities immediately.

University police said the student tweeted that he would "pull a re-enactment of Columbine and Virginia Tech at Cheyney University," according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

In the infamous 1999 shooting spree at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., two teenagers shot and killed 12 of their classmates and one teacher. The Virginia Tech campus shooting rampage left 33 people dead in April 2007.

According to university spokeswoman Pamela Carter, the student was angry because parking tickets were impacting his enrollment status.

"We are in the process of reaching out to him to meet ... and resolve the issue," Carter said.

Additional police officers were brought on to campus as a precaution. Carter said the university's administration is confident that all steps had been taken to ensure staff and students were not in any immediate danger.

Cheyney University is approximately 24 miles west of Philadelphia.
