Musical by late Yale coed reportedly headed to New York festival

A folk rock musical written by a Yale University graduate who died just days after her commencement may reportedly have a life in the theater.

The Hartford Courant reports that money is being raised through a Kickstarter fundraising campaign to produce “Independents” by Marina Keegan, 22. The goal is to raise $5,000 or more to be able to produce the musical in August at the New York International Fringe Festival.

The campaign has raised $3,400 from 65 backers thus far. The deadline is July 13, the newspaper reports.

Keegan, of Wayland, Mass., died in a single vehicle rollover on Saturday when her boyfriend, Michael Gocksch, 22, of Centerport, N.Y., lost control of the Lexus he was driving and hit a guardrail in Dennis, Mass. Keegan was pronounced dead at the scene. Gocksch, who graduated with Keegan on May 21 in New Haven, survived the crash without serious injuries.

Keegan, a columnist for the Yale Daily News, was set to begin working as an editorial assistant for The New Yorker, where she interned last summer. She had planned to move Brooklyn in June, the Courant reports.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday at the First Parish in Wayland, the Associated Press reports.
