WASHINGTON – The former acting intelligence director for Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Homeland Security Department has pleaded guilty to defrauding the government of more than $180,000.
The Justice Department says James Woosley is the highest-ranking of five people to admit to engaging in fraudulent schemes involving employees and contractors at ICE. The cases all involved fraudulent travel vouchers and attendance claims and cost ICE more than $600,000.
Woosley, 48, faces a likely sentence of 18 months to 27 months in prison. He admitted to conversion of government money in an appearance Tuesday before a federal judge and is to be sentenced July 13.
U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen in Washington says Woosley submitted phony paperwork for subordinates who participated in the fraud and that Woosley took kickbacks from the subordinates.
