Investigators say a University of Southern California student is one of two people shot to death in a BMW in what may be a bungled carjacking attempt.

A gunman opened fire at about 1 a.m. Wednesday, shattering the windows on the new luxury car and killing a man and woman in the West Adams area near the USC campus. The BMW was in the roadway, not at the curb, at the time of the shooting.

The woman was slumped in the front passenger seat, and the man was found outside the vehicle.

Cmdr. Andrew Smith and USC campus police Capt. David Carlisle confirmed hours later that the woman is a 20-year-old USC student. Her name is being withheld. Carlisle says it's unclear if the male victim is a student.
