Illinois Wesleyan fraternity suspended after student's death

Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) suspended its Sigma Pi fraternity for three years after one of its members died at an off-campus event, The Pantagraph reported.

Sigma Pi was found "responsible for serious violations of Student Code of Conduct policies at an unregistered off-campus event," IWU president Richard Wilson said in a statement Tuesday.

The violations related to "the use of alcohol and marijuana and the lack of attention to adequate safeguards for ensuring the health and well-being of those in attendance," Wilson added.

The ruling followed the March 4 death of 18-year-old freshman Brandon Landau.

Landau was found face down in a creek at the edge of White Pines State Park, not far from where the fraternity was hosting its annual formal in Oregon, Ill.

An autopsy showed that he had alcohol and marijuana in his system at the time of his death.

Wilson said Sigma Pi had the right to request reinstatement in 2015 but, if successful, would face a further four years of probation.

Karla Carney-Hall, the dean of students, told the newspaper the reaction of the fraternity's members "was what you might expect."
