Massive 1,000-acre brush fire threatens homes in rural New Jersey

A brush fire spread to 1,000 acres Monday and threatened homes in a rural area of New Jersey.

Fourteen fire trucks, three bulldozers, two helicopters and two air tankers were deployed to tackle the large brush fire near Tabernacle, in Burlington County.

No injuries or property damage were reported, but around 25 homes were under threat, said Assistant Fire Warden John Rieth of New Jersey's Forest Fire Service.

Spring is prime brush fire season for the mid-Atlantic region. Dry and windy conditions fueled the blaze, which started at 12:07 a.m. local time Monday.

Around 50 firefighters were tackling the blaze, including clearing vegetation around homes to try to prevent the fire from spreading.

A red flag warning will be in effect until Monday evening.

Two brush fires last week burned around 200 acres in Winslow Township. They were thought to have been set deliberately.
