Authorities said a 4-year-old girl has been hospitalized after she was struck by a bullet when a gun hidden between two mattresses at her Chicago home discharged as she was jumping on the bed.

Chicago police spokesman Darryl Baety said the girl is in good condition after treatment for an ankle injury.

She was at home early Saturday when she jumped on the bed. Authorities said the gun discharged and a bullet hit the child.

Police charged the 21-year-old boyfriend of the girl's mother on Sunday and he was taken into custody.

Jarquise Upton faces several charges, including one count of misdemeanor theft of lost or mislaid property. He is due in bond court on Monday.

A listed phone number for Upton would not take messages Monday. It was immediately unclear if he had an attorney.
