Guatemalan authorities say the former head of the national police force has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in extrajudicial killings, a term that includes police execution of suspects.

Assistant Interior Minister Julio Rivera Claveria says the former director of the national police force was detained Friday.

Suspect Marlene Blanco Lapola also served as assistant security minister during the administration of former president Alvaro Colom from 2008-2012.

Colom left office in January.

Rivera Claveria told a local radio station Friday that the charges were related to three killings during a raid against extortionists in 2009.
