A New Orleans lawmaker wants to rename the notorious Danziger Bridge, the site of deadly police shootings after Hurricane Katrina.

Democratic Rep. Wesley Bishop has proposed a bill to name the span the Madison-Brissette Memorial Bridge, after the two men who were killed: 17-year-old James Brissette and 40-year-old Ronald Madison, a mentally disabled man.

Four others were wounded in the shootings on the bridge.

Five current or former New Orleans police officers were convicted of civil rights violations stemming from the shootings, which involved a cover-up plot to make it appear police were justified.

Lawmakers will consider the renaming proposal in the legislative session that begins March 12.
