Arizona BASE jumper rescued from mountain after 7 hours, authorities say

An Arizona man was rescued from a cliff face roughly 150 feet from the ground after his parachute got snagged while jumping from the Superstition Mountains, authorities said.

Sam Baker, 38, of Eloy, was the third and final person in his group to leap from a 600-foot peak near Siphon Draw and became caught on the cliff after deploying his parachute at around 11 a.m., according to Elias Johnson, a spokesman for the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

Several people from Baker's group tried to rescue him and later called authorities for help after five hours of unsuccessful attempts, Johnson said.

Officials from the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Search & Rescue Team, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Mountain Rescue Team, and units with the Department of Public Safety then responded and tied Baker to a harness before lowering him to safety. The entire rescue operation took 7 hours, Johnson said.

"What they did was selfless and much appreciated," Baker said afterward. "We all know the outcome could have been a polar opposite.”

Baker, who did not require medical attention, is an experienced hiker and BASE jumper. Authorities said while it is not illegal to BASE -- an acronym for building, antenna, span, earth --jump off of the Superstition Mountains, it's not advisable due to unstable wind conditions.
